Work on spec?

Web Designer Chris Williams writes for about the perils of working on spec. The crossover between commercial design and comics becomes particularly well defined when put in these terms;

Speculative work means you create something for your client, if they like it, you get paid. If they don’t like it, you don’t get paid. There is no assurance that you’ll be compensated for your efforts. By the way, “building your portfolio” or “getting a link” is NOT compensation.

Tokyopop and online comics

From ComicBookResources, an interview with Tokyopop marketing director Marco Pavia;

Last year, when Tokyopop underwent a major restructuring, it suspended most of its original manga series, leaving a number of incomplete stories in limbo. That state of suspended animation ended last week, when Tokyopop Director of Marketing Marco Pavia announced that Tokyopop will complete most of the series, includingEarthlight, Afterlife, and Gyakushu, online. Each volume will be posted for free, one chapter per week.

Johanna Draper Carlson has an analysis;

Whether or not the books make it to print depends not only on reader/fan demand but “they also have to prove popular with our retail partners. As I said earlier, buyers often base their buying on how the previous volumes sell.” That is, if bookstores won’t commit to the books, and if previous volumes didn’t sell (no matter how long ago they were released), it doesn’t matter how many readers ask for it.

Looking back at Scott McCloud’s webcomic tips

I suppose this article highlights some of the problems with speculating about possible futures. I think that McCloud did a grand job of applying what we knew then, but I’m not sure it matches up with what we know now. Oh, the benefits of hindsight. Still, there is some timeless advice here.

Who do you write for, and how to improve

Norwegian comics writer Olaf Solstrand writes up some good advice for publishing webcomics.

While you may make a great webcomic, I guess it’s not really a comic about webcomics. So why focus solely on webcomic fans when building your readers? Take what your comic is really about and use that to win readers.

Although his article focuses on webcomics, I think that the principle remains the same for most comics. Marketing comics to a comics crowd is very much singing to the choir.

Olaf also writes a very interesting article on improving.

This is what improvement is all about: Realizing what your greatest weaknesses are, and changing them. If you believe that you are perfect, you will never improve. Everybody has mistakes — you need to find yours if you want to get rid of them.

The basic idea? You suck – figure out why!
