Following a recommendation by Aiden Smith, here is a good review of Lewis Trondheim and Olivier Appollodorus’ Bourbon Island 1730 over at Madinkbeard, which discusses POV and narration.

A ten page preview is available at First Second Books.

If you haven’t heard of Lewis Trondheim before, have a look at his website, read up on L’Association, read his interview on The Comics Journal and buy all his books.

  1. Yo ho ho! I recommend this title me hearties – although rest assured there are no such imbecilic pirate cliches in the book itself.

I found it an engrossing story, simply yet beautifully illustrated. Also, it is hilarious in parts, particularly head ornithologist Despentes’ propensity to bullseye birds with terrifying accuracy in order to better examine them. Plus, I learned a bit of history to add to my meagre knowledge, mostly gleaned from Blackadder.

Oh, and I’m right with Mandinkbeard on that jagged binding – looks nice but a right pain when you’re trying to flip through the book. Someone wants keel-hauling for that…
