Paul Gravett on Ben Katchor

with one comment

I was lucky enough to see an exhibition of Katchor’s work at the CNBDI in Angouleme, and was utterly floored by it. ‘Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer’ is one of the finest and most elaborately constructed set of narratives I’ve read in a long time.

Paul Gravett discusses his work in more detail on his site.

Ben Katchor also recently penned a musical based on instruction manuals entitled ‘The Slug Bearers of Kayrol Island (or the Friends of Dr. Rushower)’

I love found poetry. I love to read phone books, and I love catalog copy. I love Johnson Smith catalogs and old Yellow Pages and instruction manuals, especially some of them when they’re translated, when they’re for a product that’s made in the Far East and it’s some strange translation that they’ve gotten done by someone who doesn’t have a complete grasp of the English language. Yeah, I seriously like found poetry.

  1. This is not new. But you give me a fresh point of view. Thank you.
